BAaD Wedding Glasgow | Wedding Photography | Suzanne + Sam
EVERYTHING BOILS DOWN TO FUN
Suzanne and Sam’s wedding had the essence of everything that I hope for in a wedding - a downright blast of fun, and a whole bunch of unscripted, heartfelt connections between friends and family. Perfect material for myself to feast upon! My given job today, was to capture all the memories, without fuss, in my usual funky style. And considering the brides transportation to the City Centre was basically a real life Optimus Prime - I wasn’t going to have to reach too hard to make things funky! :-)
It’s always lovely when a couple comes to me from word of mouth recommendations or from seeing me work at other weddings. They’ve observed me in action and decided that I’m the right fit for them and will blend into their wedding day seamlessly. It’s one thing that’s quite difficult to anticipate from a couples perspective - they can look at all your pretty photographs and chat to you, but how you operate on the day (i.e. is the photography going to be a pain in the @ss or will it just flow nicely! ) is something that they have to take a bit of a chance on. That’s why this scenario is perfect for a relaxed and fruitful working relationship; the couple can relax in front of you because they feel at ease that you’re gonna give them what they want from the day, without fuss! It’s also really nice to catch up with those previous wedding couples if they are attending the wedding! :-)
BARRAS ART AND DESIGN
Believe it or not, in my almost 20 years of photographing weddings, this was my first shoot at Barras Art and Design, which Suzanne & Sam had chosen to host their celebrations. And it couldn’t have suited the occasion more. Affectionately known as BAaD, located in Glasgow’s iconic East End. It’s a venue that defies convention. Part industrial space, part contemporary art gallery, part urban courtyard — it’s a playground for those who want a wedding that feels fresh, modern, and distinctly Glaswegian. The main atrium, with its glass roof and spacious layout, floods the entire space with natural light — perfect for myself as a wedding photographer. More than that, the setting allowed Suzanne and Sam to put their personal stamp on every detail of the day - their desire was to have nothing too traditional, and I think BAaD was perfect from that perspective. Eschewing what ‘should’ be done at a wedding, and focussing on their own ideas and personalities to flavour the day and keep things personal, the versatility of BAaD as a venue really went hand in hand with that. From colourful florals to the street food to the decor to the party games for the kids, to a special appearance by the famous Scottish street percussion band Clanadonia, and not to mention - none other than Carol Smilie conducting the ceremony!
THE PERFECT URBAN LOCATION FOR CITY BACKDROPS
In keeping with the non-traditional theme, and especially because this was technically a twilight wedding, Suzanne and Sam decided to have their couple shoot done before the ceremony. Logistically speaking this is an excellent way to get this part out of the way before hitting the venue and then having nothing to worry about but enjoying yourself! And so we duly rambled through central Glasgow taking in murals and street scenes and quiet corners and having a grand old time. The sun even put his hat on (hiphiphip-hooray!) which gave us dramatic long shadows and bright pools of light to work with around the beautiful Glasgow Architecture, and of course…made it much warmer ;-D Then all that remained was to style through the ceremony, and continue the partying into the night. Perfect :-)
Congratulations guys!
